Thank you for your letter of 2 March about Charles Darwin.
There are a number of factors the Bank has to consider when choosing figures to be depicted on banknotes. They must have a well-established record of excellence in their field of endeavour, and their achievements have to merit commemoration in the design of one of the Bank's notes. Obviously, there are quite a number of people who meet these criteria but, as we have only four denominations of note, inevitably, as I am sure you appreciate, many worthy individuals have to be excluded.
