Didn't the Beagle's crew plunder many tortoises from the Galapagos? :)
They certainly did. The late Harriet was supposed to have been one of their number - although that story seems to have been roundly discredited now. But Darwin did travel walk around with loaded pistols during the Beagle voyage. I don't think he ever wore an eye-patch.

I want a replica with a moving jaw so I can thrust it through the letter box at door-knocking missionaries and have it shout 'bugger off!' in a comedy ventriloquist voice.

Peter McGrath should have a television series.
Couldn't agree more - and, one day soon, I think he will.

Does anyone know where Darwin got the 'curled stick' walking stick, they are reputed to only come from Kentucky USA? It appears in the guide to Down House, where I work as a garden volunteer.
